Antique Stoppered Glass Vials

Scope and Contents

This collection consists of antique viles from the Malacology Department at the Academy of Natural Sciences. The viles were used for invertebrate paleontology wet collection. The viles were transfered to the archives by John Sime. There are currently sixty-three glass vials and fifty-two glass lids.

Benjamin Waterhouse Hawkins Album

Overview Benjamin Waterhouse Hawkins, author, sculptor and naturalist, began this album in 1872, and continued to add to it intermittently, the last datable entry being of 1878. Scope and Contents

The Wilhelm Bock papers contains research materials of Wilhelm Bock, and dates from 1932 to 1964, with bulk dates from 1944 to 1964. Included are correspondence, photographs, illustrations, and notes. These materials document Bock's research into paleobotany, and type specimens which he either discovered or studied. While the collection is small, it may shed an important light onto paleobotany at the Academy.

Photographs taken by Ethelbert Watts for the expedition sent out by the Imperial Academy of Science, Leningrad, for the excavation of the Mammoth found in the River Berezowska, in 1901. The collection includes photographs of the skeleton mounted in the museum in Leningrad.

Henry Steinhauer, Notebooks

A Bethlehem, Pa. minister and amateur geologist, Steinhauer's 165 page notebook of information and observations on fossils, particularly those found in coal measures is not dated, but tentatively ascribed to the period following his publication in the American Philsophical Society's Transactions, 1817 and before his death. The Academy's 1835 catalogue of the library describes this item as: "Steinhaur, MS. Geological Notes of the late Rev. Henry Steinhaur."
